Make Sure it Works

Broken urinalIf you’re looking for business lessons, you don’t have to look hard. I found this one in the men’s restroom. The maintenance man for our building greeted me at the door with “watch out for the first urinal… she’s broke.  We’re replacing all those auto-flush units with good old handles.”

This was surprising to me, so I inquired, “The auto-flush urinals are “higher tech”, greener with less water usage and more hygienic, so why replace them?”  He matter-of-factly stated, “Because they work.”

I love ajax sites and catchy slogans that get discussed at the water cooler, but no matter how slick your next business tactic is… it must work.  It’s the same issue for businesses online and off.  At the end of the day, customers want it to just work.  How sexy or creative your offer sounds or looks only goes so far.  Be sure your customers and prospects understand… it works.  If you think the web is different and flashy is critical, visit Craigslist.
