I think a high majority would prefer to do something else. My conclusion is based on incessant complaints from acquaintances, friends and the web stats of my web sites during business hours. It came as no surprise when I read a recent study stating people who work when they don’t have to… really like what they do.

Nearly 90 percent of the US workforce loves their jobs — especially those who still work after the age of 65, a study published Monday by the University of Chicago showed.

“Job satisfaction is especially high among those 65 and over because most people working at that age are not forced to still work, due to financial reasons, but choose to do so because they like their jobs,” Tom Smith, who led the study, said in a statement.

I do have hope most anyone can find a role that both fits their needs and helps the employer. If you love watching movies or baking cupcakes, can you make six figures doing this full-time? Maybe not today, but with a good career plan you’ll start focusing more on doing things you love and less about what you earn. So what do you think… do you love your job? Go place your vote on this question at Urban Monarch.

How far do you take the issue of company loyalty if your product is actually edible? Here’s a few profiles of my friends’ approaches to their own tasty business (some names have been changed to protect their jobs).

1- Miller Brewing – Most beer drinkers have their favorite brand and Tom is no different. He’s a marketing/promotions guy for Miller and he loves his products. He only buys Miller (always) and after our weekly basketball game, he implored us all to check out their new product, Miller Chill. I have yet to try out their new light beer (brewed with lime & salt), but I will because Tom’s enthusiasm and dedication to his products compel me to help. I’m good like that!

2- Dippin Dots – You may or may not know of the pellet-sized ice cream since they are mainly found in arenas, amusement parks and theaters. But, Nancy is the opposite of Tom. She knows all her flavors and the details of her products (she’s in sales), but will try most anyone’s ice cream and rarely eats her own product when out. She sees it as checking out the competition and who wouldn’t want to eat ice cream and write it off?

3- Taco Bell – Ok, let me quickly clarify. Renee works at Taco Bell’s headquarters, here in Louisville, KY as a part of Yum! Brands, not in the drive thru. Part of her marketing job is to visit random franchisees via a short plane ride and check their POS (point of sale) materials and overall restaurant experience… including food. She only eats “Taco Hell” as a job requirement. She does this bi-weekly and still stays in shape to run marathons.

4- Coca-cola – Jason takes the cake or in this case… he only takes Coke. My buddy works for the HUGE soda company and is as die hard as they come. He won’t eat at a restaurant that serves Pepsi and will struggle to be cordial to you if caught ordering one. Seriously, he feels he should support his company and not be caught dead across enemy lines. He also has “date nights” with his wife where they visit grocery and convenient stores to check his products’ placement. For those who claim to be product evangelists… take a note from Tom and Jason.

People love to talk about how much their job sucks. A timely example was today from Chogeys United and his post was titled “Jobs Worse Than Yours.”

His title sums up most of the workforce today… work sucks! I disagree that work isn’t fun but that really depends on your view. Are you working just for a paycheck? For your passion? For a temporary stint? Whatever your reason, you get to choose how you view your job and its tasks.

While this blogger saw a walking Starbucks salesman as a horrible task, I saw it as a great way to market your product. I envisioned a Starbucks manager wanting to gain extra sales or give out samples of a new product to prospects that may not be customers.

I admit I see most things through the lens of building a business, not showing up to follow the orders of the boss. Poking fun of business is a popular and profitable area, but the fact remains most of us still have to work to pay the bills. If you have to work each day, you might as well find the brightspot. And if you’re a manager you need to explain to how a task helps grow the business. This walking coffee dispenser could really help, but as Chogey shows us… it’s the view of the task that matters.
