The World Isn’t Just Flat… It’s Terribly Small

Today, we arrived in St. Barths and shortly after we got off our boat we spotted a Louisvillian just a few feet away. His yacht shown below is called Touche and he actually left Louisville a few years ago. We chatted for a few minutes and we lived less than three miles from each other.

Most folks know that I use people around the world to accomplish different business tasks, so I agree with the “world is flat” theory, but it’s also amazingly small.

Update: I woke up today are realized the real lesson here is NOT that the world is small, but if there’s someone you want to meet professionally or network with… you CAN reach them. It’s relatively easy to break down the world of connections if you try. I’ll post soon about how I got lunch with my favorite author and he PAID for it.

Idea Festival starts Tomorrow

The popular Idea Festival brings a global audience to my good ol’ Louisville, Kentucky. While its name says festival, it collects more creative, smart folks in an area like a think tank. If you don’t much about the event, check out the agenda. The speaker list is impressive… Steve Wozniak, Tiffany Shlain, Ray Bradbury, Laurence Gonzales and even, They Might be Giants!

I’ll be at most of the sessions and blogging over at Louisville’s city blog, More Than Derby. I’m specifically interested in the following sessions. If you’re attending look me up or follow me on twitter.Â If only they had Jacob’s Conferenceer, which is still the best conference app I’ve seen.

Can LinkedIn help you locally?

The majority of my connections on LinkedIn are outside of Louisville, KY, where I reside. Since I’ve been an open networker, I’ve received many invitations to connect around the world. Also, I’ll admit Louisville isn’t the home to most early adopters of web apps. This doesn’t make me like Louisville or LinkedIn any less.

But last week, I was asked by Louisville LinkedIn user to connect him with another Louisville LinkedIn user about a job. While this may regularly happen in other markets, it was nice to see the power of online networking has made it to good ol’ Kentucky.
